Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences
Medical laboratory sciences (MLS) is a health care profession with special expertise in laboratory medicine. The members of this profession are responsible for providing accurate and reliable medical laboratory information for monitoring health, diagnosing and treating diseases.
Therefore, the course aims at providing health care professionals who will serve at both the public, private sector and non- profit making organizations. It is intended to equip trainees with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them provide health services at all levels of health care services.
Course Offered
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
Clinical Officers are involved in proactively managing preventative care, reaching out to patients to ensure they get recommended tests and follow up interventions. Their major functions include; provision of curative, promotive and rehabilitative services, management of health services, and participation in health education to the public, act as catalysts of change in ensuring community is healthy for national growth, liaising with community leaders in increasing community participation in preventive health care.
Objectives of the Course
- Carry out laboratory tests
- Initiate and participate in the improvement of diagnostic procedures
- Plan and set up a laboratory
- Supervise other laboratory personnel
- Carry out quality control and quality assurance.
- Create awareness and appreciation of laboratory services to the general public.
- Analyze, interpret and report laboratory results
- Participate in the training of laboratory personnel
- Participate in continuing medical education.
Expected Working Field
- Public and Private hospitals at various levels of healthcare
- Research institutions such as KEMRI (Kenya Medical and Research Institute) AMREF
- Industries-Particularly in microbiology /parasitology food laboratories to ensure food products are free from microorganisms and other contaminants.
- Self-employment: Qualified and registered professionals with KMLTTB- (Kenya Medical Laboratory Technician and Technologist Board) can establish private medical laboratories and deliver services to the patient upon approval with the relevant board.
